The Senior Dependent Relative Permit (subclass 114 and 838) is designed for older relatives of an Australian citizen, an Australian permanent resident, or an eligible New Zealand citizen to reside permanently in Australia. This is conditional upon them being reliant financially on their Australian relative and satisfying the requisite age criteria.

The Senior Dependent Relative Permit (Subclass 114) is intended for applicants who are currently outside Australia. It is necessary for applicants to be offshore at both the time of application submission and when the permit is ultimately approved.

Conversely, the Senior Dependent Relative Permit (Subclass 838) caters to applicants who are already within Australia. Applicants must be onshore within Australia at the time they apply and also when the permit is conferred upon them
