Understanding the Professional Development (Subclass 407) Training Visa

The Professional Development (Subclass 407) Training Visa serves as a pathway for individuals to engage in professional growth and occupational training within Australia. It offers a temporary stay for those seeking to enhance their skills through a structured program.

Participants can involve themselves in one of the following training categories under the 407 visa:

This is tailored for individuals who need to complete training to obtain a professional registration or license either in their home country or in Australia.

  1. Suitable for individuals nominated by a recognized sponsor in Australia to engage in a particular profession listed on the eligible skilled occupations, needing structured training to hone their skills for that occupation.

This training is segmented into three distinct subcategories:

  • International Education: Students who are currently enrolled in an educational institution abroad may need to undergo practical training, research, or observation to fulfill the requirements of their degree or qualification.
  • Government-Endorsed Training: Individuals who have the endorsement of their home country’s government, or the Australian government, for structured occupational training.
  • Professional Development Programs: For overseas organizations seeking to have their employees participate in custom professional development programs designed to contribute to organizational growth.

Please note that as of the 19th of April, 2017, the Skilled Occupation List (SOL) was superseded by the Short Term Skilled Occupation List (STSOL). The current eligible skilled occupations are on a combined list and are subject to revisions biannually, with updates typically occurring on July 1st.

If you are planning to apply for Australian visa under GSM category, it is mandatory for you to undertake SkillSelect Program. This online program has two steps: first, submission of an EOI (Expression of Interest), and second, actual visa application.

Basic information to be submitted with EOI

You are required to provide information that is required to submit your expression of interest depending upon the type of visa that you are eligible for. However, following are some of the basic information that you need to successfully lodge your EOI

If you are applying this visa under the post-study work stream, a skill assessment is not needed.

Only if you are applying under the Graduate stream, you must provide an evidence of having your skills assessed by the relevant authority.

While the checklist varies depending on different cases, some of the common documents required are:

  • Current passports or travel documents
  • Copy of birth certificate showing parents of both primary applicant and the spouse
  • Evidence of name change
  • Certified copies of marriage certificates
  • If you are in de facto relationship, evidence showing a relationship for at least 12 months is required
  • If the spouse is widowed, divorced or separated permanently, a certified copy of death certificate, divorce or separation documents are required.
